Volume Force

The Volume Force technical indicator combines volume, trading range and price trend. It is used to calculate the Klinger Oscillator that was developed by Stephen Klinger. The indicator will switch between positive and negative values when the trend changes, with the trend (T) being defined by the sum of the Open, High and Low interval values.

The contribution of the volume is to only highlight the money flow associated with a given trend i.e. the strength of the trend. The indicator will switch between positive and negative values as the Trend (T) changes regardless of the underlying volume.

There are two key attributes to the Volume Force indicator that can be used to trade against, mainly:

  • Trend Direction
  • Trend Strength

The trending direction can be identified by whether or not the Volume Force indicator is above or below zero. The strength of the trend can be identified by the value of the Volume Force indicator and the period of time that the value is above or below zero.

For example if the underlying market is trending upwards, a trading alert could be set up on timetotrade to provide a notification of when the Volume Force indicator falls below zero, thus indicating that the short term trend is over:

Alternatively an alert could be set up to provide a notification of when the Volume Indicator rises above or falls below a threshold value and therefore indicate a potential breakout.

Volume Force Formula

The equation for calculating the Volume Force indicator is:

Where:

  • Failed to parse (MathML with SVG or PNG fallback (recommended for modern browsers and accessibility tools): Invalid response ("Math extension cannot connect to Restbase.") from server "https://api.formulasearchengine.com/v1/":): {\displaystyle T} = +1 or -1; if the interval (high + low + close) is greater than previous T value then the value is +1 else -1
  • Failed to parse (MathML with SVG or PNG fallback (recommended for modern browsers and accessibility tools): Invalid response ("Math extension cannot connect to Restbase.") from server "https://api.formulasearchengine.com/v1/":): {\displaystyle T_n} = The number of interval periods where the trend is +1 or -1.
  • Failed to parse (MathML with SVG or PNG fallback (recommended for modern browsers and accessibility tools): Invalid response ("Math extension cannot connect to Restbase.") from server "https://api.formulasearchengine.com/v1/":): {\displaystyle \sum_{1}^{\displaystyle T_n} (HIGH - LOW)} = The sum of the high - close while the trend is positive or negative.
  • Failed to parse (MathML with SVG or PNG fallback (recommended for modern browsers and accessibility tools): Invalid response ("Math extension cannot connect to Restbase.") from server "https://api.formulasearchengine.com/v1/":): {\displaystyle \Big|} = absolute value

Formula Description:

Volume multiplied by the absolute value of 2 multiplied by the High minus the Low, divided by the sum of the High minus the Low while the trend is positive or negative, minus 1 multiplied by the Trend Direction (+1 or -1) multiplied by 100
