Risk Reward Win Loss Ratios

Within selected investments tabs there is a breakdown of Risk Reward and Win Loss ratios plus over all Performance based on the trades entered:

The following explains how the various Win Loss and Risk Reward values are calculated.

  • Average Reward: The average profit based on the profitable closing transactions. Deducts the apportioned commission from the opening trade(s) and the commission on the closing trade when calculating the profit on each transaction. For example if a 200k position is opened with a $6 commission, and then half of that position was closed at a profit of $100 and a commission charge of $3, then the profit on that transaction would be calculated as $100 - ($6 * 100k / 200k) - $3 = $94. The $94 profitable closing transaction would be added to the sum of all profitable closing transactions and then divided by the total number of profitable closing transactions to get the average profit.

  • Average Risk: The average loss based on the loss making closing transactions. Includes the apportioned commission from the opening trade(s) and the commission on the closing trade as per the Average Reward explanation.

  • Reward to Risk Ratio: The ratio of the Average Reward to the Average Loss. For example if the Average Reward was $50 and the Average Loss is $100, the Reward to Risk Ratio would be 50 / 100 = 50% i.e. the Average Reward is 50% of the Average Risk.

  • Win Loss Ratio: The ratio of number of profitable to loss making closing transactions. For example if the total number of profitable trades was 80 and the total number of loss making trades was 20, the Win Loss Ratio would be 80 / 20 = 400% i.e. there are four times as many winning profitable trades when compared to loss making trades.

  • Performance: A profitable trading strategy will have a performance of greater than 0%. With a Performance of 100%, the trading strategy generates 100% profit when compared to losses.

    The Win Ratio is the number of winning profitable trades divided by the total number of trades. The Loss Ratio is the number of losing trades divided by the total number of trades. For example if the Average Reward was $50 and the Average Loss was $100, and the total number of trades was 100, with 80 profitable trades and 20 losing trades, the Performance would be calculated as ($50 x (80/100)) / ($100 x (20 / 100)) - 1 = 40 / 20 - 1 = 100%. In this example the total win is $4,000 and the total loss is $2,000. The overall profit is $2,000, which is a 100% return when compared to total losses of $2,000.

Failed to parse (MathML with SVG or PNG fallback (recommended for modern browsers and accessibility tools): Invalid response ("Math extension cannot connect to Restbase.") from server "https://api.formulasearchengine.com/v1/":): {\displaystyle Performance = (\frac{Average Reward * Win Ratio}{Average Loss * Loss Ratio}) - 1 }
